TRANSLATION & LOCALIZATION
The difference between localization and translation may cause confusion.
Translation is the process of translating words or texts from one language (called source-language) into another (called target-language) following the invariance of the meaning. The localization goes further: it entails a cultural dimension.
Given the globalization of the commerce and the apogee of Internet, translation alone is not sufficient: it is also necessary to localize, in other words, to adapt. Localizing a product or a service implies making modifications or adjustments from the original in order to create a product, or a service, that can be commercialized in the target market.
Therefore localization doesn't merely mean translation, rather adapting the text while taking into account the cultural aspects of the target country. In this way, localization can become a powerful marketing tool.
When can we use it? In different contexts, but mainly when we are translating software, websites, blogs and videogames.
So, does that mean that we don't translate anymore? Of course not! Translation is the basis of several language processes, like localization and transcreation, and in some cases it is sufficient.

TRANSCREATION
In the current digital society, adapting the message to a specific market and connecting with the target audience is essential.
The term transcreation was coined a decade ago and it is usually associated to the area of marketing and advertisement. It consists of extracting the essence of a concept and creatively adapting it to the cultural target context.
As the word itself suggests, transcreation stands for a fusion between translation and creativity, and it is a translation method that attempts to recreate the same emotional response that the source language does.
Therefore what is the difference between localization and transcreation? The main difference is that transcreation has a more creative and free approach. Transcreation is a creative translation method in which the source text represents only the basis from which to start.

COPYWRITING
Copywriting is the creation and the composition of slogans, taglines, advertising texts and content. It is salesmanship with written words, the art of creating quality advertising texts in order to attract potential clients. It is the ability to make products and services more attractive by inciting an action.
This action could be: finding a product or service interesting, feeling curiosity for a product or a service, asking for information, buying a product, filling in a form, leaving one’s own personal details or clicking on a button, etc.

PROOFREADING
Proofreading is the process in which we scan a text in order to look for grammatical, syntactical and spelling mistakes.
It is a final revision, and compared with editing (see next service), the text to be proofreaded is not checked against the source text. The meaning of the sentences and the terminology are not meticulously checked as the revision focuses predominantly on the form, and less on the meaning.

EDITING
The editing process focuses more on terminology and meaning. It is a deeper and more complete revision and it takes more time; it includes comparing the target text to the source text.
In other words, when editing one must be sure to use the appropriate terminology and that the text makes sense semantically. For this purpose, we need to check each term and word that could be of concern.

POST-EDITING
Due to recent trends in globalization, and the increased volume of information generated each day, the demand for translations has grown exponentially.
As a result, machine translation has become a important tool to satisfy the growing need of localization.
Regarding the aforementioned, and particularly for big projects, machine translation post-editing has become a highly demanded professional practice by the translation agencies.
Translation software has significantly improved throughout the past decade. The new software, combined with translation memories, makes for a higher quality final result. However, the product of a machine translation is not comparable to that of a human translation. Hence post-editing is a process in which a professional improves a software-generated translation.

My fields are software, technology/IT, marketing and communication, websites and apps and technical texts. I also have ample experience in other fields.
CAT TOOLS
The main CAT tools I use are SDL Trados Studio (2015), Multiterm, Passolo, MateCat, WordFast and Poedit. However, I can use the software that the client and the agency usually use.
LANGUAGES PAIRS
I translate and localize from English and Spanish into Italian and from English and Italian into Spanish. The services of content creation, transcreation and copywriting are only available in Italian.
